Dubai:Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has successfully completed Phase Two of its Smart Pedestrian Signal Expansion Project, with 10 new intersections across the emirate now equipped with cutting-edge smart pedestrian signals. This follows Phase One, which covered 17 intersections, bringing the total number of smart signal-equipped sites to 27.
The initiative is part of RTA’s broader strategy to integrate advanced technology into traffic management systems, boost road safety, and improve the experience for both pedestrians and motorists. It supports Dubai’s vision to lead globally in smart infrastructure and sustainable mobility solutions.Mohammed Al Ali, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, highlighted the key locations included in this phase: intersections along Omar Bin Al Khattab Street, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Street, Al Satwa Street, Salah Al Din Street, Amman Street, Al Qusais Street near labour accommodations, and Oud Metha Street in front of a school zone.“Initial results show a clear improvement in pedestrian safety since the smart signals became operational at these sites,” Al Ali said. “The system has proven effective in reducing risks and enhancing the overall commuting experience.”

The smart pedestrian signal system employs intelligent thermal camera technology to detect pedestrian presence and movement in real time—day or night. These sensors are integrated with push-button systems that confirm actual crossing intent, enabling accurate and responsive signal timing.“The signals are designed with dynamic sensors that adjust crossing times based on walking speed,” Al Ali added. “This ensures safer crossings for the elderly, children, and People of Determination while also maintaining traffic flow by minimizing unnecessary stops for vehicles.”He further explained that locations are selected based on a comprehensive evaluation matrix that considers factors such as pedestrian accident data, road classification, traffic volume, nearby crossing points, availability of footbridges, and overall road design.
With this latest expansion, RTA continues its commitment to transforming Dubai’s streets into safer, smarter, and more pedestrian-friendly environments—reinforcing the city’s status as a leader in intelligent urban development.
