New Delhi: The INDIA alliance has announced former Supreme Court judge B. Sudarshan Reddy as its candidate for the Vice Presidential election. The decision was taken during a meeting of the opposition alliance, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge formally declaring his name.
“This is not just an electoral contest but an ideological battle,” Kharge said while announcing the candidature. “B. Sudarshan Reddy is someone who can safeguard the Constitution and democratic values. His name was unanimously accepted by all members of the alliance,” he added. The INDIA bloc also confirmed that the nomination will be filed on August 21.
Born on July 8, 1946, in Andhra Pradesh, Sudarshan Reddy began his legal career in 1971 when he enrolled as an advocate with the Andhra Pradesh Bar Council in Hyderabad. He served as government pleader in the Andhra Pradesh High Court between 1988 and 1990 and briefly as Additional Solicitor General for the central government in 1990.
On May 2, 1995, he was appointed a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He later became the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court on December 5, 2005, and went on to serve as a judge of the Supreme Court of India from 2007 until July 8, 2011.With his vast judicial experience, the opposition hopes that Sudarshan Reddy will emerge as a strong symbol in the fight to uphold constitutional principles and democratic integrity.
