Abu Dhabi: The expatriate community in the UAE is set to celebrate Onam in grand style this year, with the festival coinciding with a three-day weekend. Since Prophet’s Day falls on Friday, followed by the regular weekend on Saturday and Sunday, Malayali expats are preparing to make the most of the extended holiday for Thiruvonam festivities.
Onam shopping has already picked up momentum across the country, with expatriates busy purchasing traditional attire and preparing for the grand Onam feast (Onasadya). As in previous years, Lulu Hypermarket has rolled out a wide range of festive offerings, bringing the essence of Kerala to the UAE.

From authentic Kerala bananas and vegetables to jaggery, chips, and an extensive selection of traditional snacks, Lulu has stocked up to cater to the demand. “This year, we are importing around 2,500 tonnes of fruits and vegetables from India to meet the GCC’s Onam market demand,” said Zulfiqar Kadavath, Director of Fruits and Vegetables at Lulu. He added that the hypermarket has ensured a diverse collection of authentic Kerala products for the season.
Lulu is also hosting its signature Onasadya, curated under the supervision of renowned chef Puthuyidam Mohanan Namboothiri. The traditional vegetarian feast will feature 25 dishes, with pre-booking now open.
Adding to the excitement, Lulu has announced a Payasam Festival featuring 30 varieties of Kerala’s beloved dessert. This includes traditional favorites as well as healthy options such as Navarathna Payasam, Tender Coconut (Ilaneer) Payasam, Jackfruit Payasam, and Millet Payasam. Customers can place their orders both online and at Lulu outlets across the UAE.
To enhance the festive spirit, Lulu stores are also offering vibrant Onapookkalam (floral arrangements), as part of its seasonal campaign, aptly named “Onam is Here.”
With festive markets buzzing and community celebrations in full swing, this year’s Onam promises to be a memorable one for Malayali expatriates in the UAE, blending tradition, togetherness, and the joy of home away from home.
