Dubai, September 4, 2025 – Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the successful completion of Phase 1 of its advanced traffic signal upgrade, marking a major step toward smarter and smoother mobility in the city. The central control system, now powered by the next-generation UTC-UX Fusion technology, has already boosted traffic flow across several busy intersections by up to 37%.
Smarter Signals for a Smarter Dubai
The system leverages artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, and digital twin technology to optimize traffic flow. By detecting congestion patterns in real time, it enables proactive adjustments to signal timings, reducing waiting times and improving coordination between intersections.
Key results from Phase 1 include:
- 37% efficiency gains at Jumeirah Street intersections
- 29.4% improvement at Al Badaa Street intersections
- 16.9% improvement at Kuwait Street intersections
- 16.4% efficiency gains at Omar Bin Al Khattab Street intersections
Overall, travel times dropped by 10% to 20%, offering Dubai road users a smoother driving experience.
Supporting Multimodal Transport
The upgraded traffic signal system doesn’t just benefit cars. It is designed to prioritize emergency vehicles, enhance public transport efficiency, and improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The new framework also enables future integration with connected vehicle technologies (V2X) and other smart devices, paving the way for even more precise data-driven traffic management.
What’s Next in the RTA Upgrade Plan
According to Mohammed Al Ali, Director of Intelligent Traffic Systems Department at RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, this is only the beginning. “By the third quarter of 2026, around 300 intersections across Dubai will be fully upgraded to the new system,” he confirmed.
The phased expansion underscores Dubai’s commitment to becoming a global smart city leader by embracing cutting-edge infrastructure and sustainable mobility solutions.
Driving Toward a Smarter Future
Dubai’s ongoing investment in intelligent traffic systems highlights its forward-thinking approach to urban mobility. As the RTA prepares for the next phases, residents and commuters can look forward to faster journeys, reduced congestion, and a more connected transport ecosystem.
With the city’s population and vehicle numbers steadily rising, the success of the UTC-UX Fusion system reaffirms Dubai’s position as a pioneer in traffic management and smart mobility innovation.
