Safety Concerns and Protocol Discrepancies Lead to Relocation of the Season Finale
MUMBAI – In a significant shift for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially moved the final match from Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to Ahmedabad. The championship decider, scheduled for May 31, was reassigned following deliberations over safety protocols and administrative requirements from local authorities.
The decision comes as a blow to the fans in Bengaluru, especially after the stadium was initially designated to host the grand finale. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that while Bengaluru was the primary choice, the venue was shifted due to “certain requirements from the local association and authorities that were beyond the scope of BCCI’s established guidelines and protocols.”
A Shadow of Past Tragedy
The shadow of last year’s tragic events looms large over this decision. During the IPL 2025 celebrations, following Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) historic title win, a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium resulted in the deaths of 11 people.
The incident led to a temporary shutdown of the venue for both domestic and international fixtures. While the stadium was cleared for this year’s IPL matches after a comprehensive safety audit, the BCCI appears to be prioritizing stringent crowd management and safety standards for the high-stakes final.
Administrative Friction
Beyond safety concerns, the lead-up to the current season was marred by administrative friction. Reports indicated that local MLAs had publicly demanded free tickets and VIP treatment, creating a logistical and ethical headache for the organizers.
The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) expressed its disappointment in an official statement, noting that they had provided a detailed framework to the BCCI outlining their preparedness. “Despite our preparedness… we understand that the BCCI has taken a decision to allot these matches to other venues,” the KSCA stated, adding that they respect the BCCI’s prerogative despite not receiving formal communication on the specific reasons for the shift.
Playoff Schedule Update
With the final now set for the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the BCCI has also finalized the venues for the other knockout fixtures:
- Qualifier 1: May 26 – Dharamsala
- Eliminator: May 27 – New Chandigarh
- Qualifier 2: May 29 – New Chandigarh
- Grand Final: May 31 – Ahmedabad
As the league enters its business end, the focus remains on ensuring a secure environment for fans, a priority that has ultimately dictated the relocation of the season’s biggest match.
