From cinematic inspiration to the Chief Minister’s chair, designer Safir Ahmed breaks down the meticulous craftsmanship behind C. Joseph Vijay’s signature black suit.
CHENNAI: As superstar-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay begins his tenure as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, his policy decisions aren’t the only things capturing the public’s imagination. The “Thalapathy” of Tamil cinema, now the “CM” of the state, has traded traditional political whites for a sharp, commanding black suit—a move that has set social media on fire and redefined the visual language of Dravidian politics.
The ensemble, which Vijay wore for both his swearing-in ceremony on Sunday and his debut appearance in the Legislative Assembly on Monday, was the result of a week of strategic planning and 48 hours of intensive hand-tailoring.
A Cinematic Reference for a Historic Moment
The mastermind behind the look, Safir Ahmed of the renowned Chennai design house Safir & Shadab, revealed that the Chief Minister had a very specific vision for his transition into office. Moving away from the cream-colored outfits typically associated with election campaigns, Vijay looked to his own cinematic legacy for inspiration.
According to Ahmed, the Chief Minister requested a silhouette similar to the iconic suit he sported in the 2022 blockbuster Beast. “He was very clear about what he wanted,” Ahmed stated. “Black stands out instantly on stage and on camera. While lighter shades work for the heat of a campaign trail, black commands immediate attention and authority.”
Craftsmanship and Design Details
The outfit is far from a standard off-the-rack piece. The ensemble features:
- The Fabric: A premium black wool with a sophisticated matte finish, ensuring it didn’t reflect harsh stage lights or camera flashes.
- The Silhouette: A minimalist two-button jacket with a classic notch lapel, paired with a high-performance, wrinkle-free white shirt.
- The Technique: The suit was handcrafted using traditional ‘canvas construction.’ Unlike fused suits, this method allows the jacket to drape naturally over the body, providing a perfect fit that moves with the wearer—a necessity for a long day of ceremonies and legislative sessions.
The New ‘Uniform’ of Tamil Nadu?
The choice of black was also a strategic departure from the blue suit Vijay wore during the high-profile audio launch of Jana Nayagan in Malaysia. By opting for a more formal, somber tone, the CM appears to be signaling a shift from “superstar” to “statesman.”
While many are wondering if this sharp, modern aesthetic will become Vijay’s permanent political uniform, the designer noted that the primary goal was to ensure the Chief Minister looked the part for a historic transition. In a state where political attire is often a statement of identity, Vijay’s “Beast-mode” suit has certainly made its mark.
