Addressing an emergency session of the Security Council, Ambassador Mohamed Abushahab, the Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN, confirmed that the critical facility remains safe and fully operational. Despite the lack of an immediate disaster, Ambassador Abushahab issued a stern warning to the council, stating that the lack of catastrophic consequences does not lessen the gravity of the assault.

The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, located in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, is a cornerstone of the UAE’s clean energy transition. The facility supplies up to 25% of the nation’s electricity, generating more than 40 terawatt-hours of clean energy annually to power homes, hospitals, and heavy industry.

Ambassador Abushahab reassured the council of the plant’s resilience, noting:

“There were no injuries nor was there radiological release. The Barakah nuclear power plant remains safe, stable and operational… The deliberate targeting of civilian facilities constitutes a flagrant violation of international law, and attacks on nuclear facilities designated for peaceful purposes represent a violation of utmost gravity.”

The sentiment was echoed by other member states during the emergency session. Pakistan’s ambassador to the UN strongly condemned the reckless actions, noting that strikes on nuclear installations risk causing irreversible civilian harm and severe environmental degradation.

Diplomats collectively urged all involved parties to exercise maximum restraint and de-escalate tensions immediately, cautioning that any further escalation could jeopardize global peace and security. The consensus among council members remains absolute: civilian nuclear infrastructure must never be utilized as a tool for military or political escalation under any circumstances.
