Air defence forces fully prepared to defend national assets following drone strikes targeting vital infrastructure, including the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant.
ABU DHABI — The UAE Ministry of Defence announced that national air defence systems successfully detected and intercepted six hostile drones targeting civilian and vital installations across the country over the past 48 hours. The operations were executed with maximum readiness, resulting in zero human casualties and no operational impact on the safety of vital infrastructure.
The recent wave of interceptions follows a blatant attack on the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant on May 17, 2026. Ongoing technical investigations and flight tracking revealed that all six drones—including those involved in the Barakah incident—originated from Iraqi territory.
Of the three drones targeting the nuclear facility on Sunday, two were successfully brought down by air defences. The third struck an electricity generator located outside the plant’s inner perimeter, causing no catastrophic damage.
Escalating Regional Threats
The Ministry of Defence reasserted that the UAE reserves its full right to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty and national security in accordance with international laws and conventions.
The developments have intensified international focus on Iran-backed militias operating in Iraq under the umbrella of the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF). The regional spillover was further highlighted over the weekend when neighboring Saudi Arabia confirmed it had intercepted three hostile drones entering its airspace from Iraq.
Diplomatic Push at the UN Security Council
In response to the escalation, the UAE has approached the United Nations Security Council, demanding a strong, unified condemnation of the attacks. Addressing the world body, Mohamed Abushahab, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN, emphasized that targeting peaceful nuclear infrastructure is a flagrant violation of the UN Charter.
“The absence of catastrophic consequences does not lessen the extreme gravity of the Barakah attack,” Ambassador Abushahab stated, warning that such provocations pose a direct threat to both regional and international peace.
The UAE Armed Forces remain on high alert, with military authorities reassuring the public of their absolute readiness to neutralize any subsequent threats targeting national security or civilian assets.
