Members of the United Nations Security Council have strongly condemned the drone attack targeting an electricity generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra region of the UAE.
In a statement issued late Monday, the Security Council described the incident as an “egregious drone attack” and said it constituted a flagrant violation of international law, warning that such actions pose serious risks to civilian lives, infrastructure, and the environment.
The council members expressed deep concern over what they described as a dangerous escalation and demanded the immediate and permanent cessation of all attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure in the UAE, including attacks or threats targeting peaceful nuclear facilities.
The statement referenced relevant resolutions adopted by the Security Council and the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency concerning the protection of peaceful nuclear installations.
Council members also took note of remarks by the IAEA Director-General, who expressed grave concern about the incident and stressed that any military activity threatening nuclear safety is unacceptable.
The Security Council called on all states to uphold the highest standards of nuclear safety, security, and safeguards, while refraining from actions that could endanger nuclear facilities or operations.
The council further reaffirmed that the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant was designed, constructed, and operated according to the highest international safety standards under the oversight of the UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation and in line with IAEA guidelines.
The members of the Security Council also reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East and expressed strong support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the United Arab Emirates in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter.
