Meteorological experts warn of unprecedented temperature spikes and unpredictable monsoon shifts as El Niño conditions develop.

DUBAI / THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — Meteorologists have issued a critical weather warning for the global community, particularly impacting the Gulf region and Kerala, as the formidable El Niño phenomenon marks its return. Climate scientists confirm that the warming of equatorial Pacific waters is set to trigger a period of extreme weather anomalies, characterized by unprecedented summer heatwaves and highly erratic rainfall patterns in the coming months.

Dual Threat: Scorching Heat and Torrential Rain

The incoming El Niño phase is expected to significantly disrupt global atmospheric circulation. For the Gulf region, which is home to millions of Malayali expatriates, this translates to an intensification of the already harsh summer. Temperatures are projected to spike well above seasonal averages, bringing prolonged heatwaves and challenging living conditions.

Simultaneously, the impact on the Indian subcontinent—specifically Kerala—presents a complex meteorological paradox. While El Niño is traditionally associated with a weakening of the Southwest Monsoon, experts warn that atmospheric instability could instead lead to highly concentrated, torrential downpours. This raises the risk of flash floods and severe urban flooding, interspersed with longer, dryer spells that could trigger drought-like conditions later in the season.

Public Health and Safety Advisory

Authorities across the Middle East and India are urging the public to prepare for extreme climate fluctuations.

Key Precautions Issued by Health Authorities:
  • Avoid direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours to prevent heatstroke.
  • Maintain optimal hydration levels, especially for outdoor laborers and the elderly.
  • Stay updated on regional meteorological alerts regarding sudden shifts in rainfall.

Agricultural departments in Kerala are also formulating contingency plans to safeguard crops against the unpredictable dual threat of sudden deluges and prolonged dry spells. As global climate patterns shift into high gear, proactive mitigation and adherence to official safety guidelines remain paramount.
