Ismael Saibari’s brilliant opener for Morocco canceled out by a Vinicius Jr stunner in a high-octane Group C encounter.

NEW YORK: Title favorites Brazil and Qatar 2022 trailblazers Morocco played out an intense, hard-fought 1-1 draw in their highly anticipated FIFA World Cup Group C clash on Sunday. In front of a capacity crowd at the New York New Jersey stadium, both footballing powerhouses displayed immense tactical prowess, but ultimately failed to break the deadlock despite a flurry of late chances.

The match sparked into life when Morocco, the first African nation to ever reach a World Cup semifinal, broke the deadlock with a piece of pure artistic brilliance. Real Madrid maestro Brahim Diaz sliced open the Seleção backline with a perfectly weighted, defense-splitting pass. Ismael Saibari timed his run to perfection, chasing down the through-ball and delightfully lofting it over an advancing Alisson Becker to send the Moroccan fans into absolute delirium.

However, the five-time world champions responded with the resilience expected of footballing royalty. Just minutes later, Bruno Guimaraes found Vinicius Jr on the far left edge of the penalty box. The dynamic winger showcased his trademark flair, cutting inside to create half a yard of space before unleashing a ferocious, unstoppable strike into the far corner past a diving Yassine Bounou.

The second half turned into a spectacular duel between two of the world’s finest shot-stoppers. Just before the halftime whistle, Bounou pulled off a stunning reflex save, diving full-stretch to his left to deny a spectacular acrobatic overhead kick from Lucas Paqueta. The experienced Moroccan goalkeeper was called into action again later, positioning himself flawlessly to thwart Raphinha’s goal-bound effort after a brilliant setup by Vinicius Jr.

Not to be outdone, Brazilian custodian Alisson Becker proved his world-class credentials deep into stoppage time. The Liverpool goalkeeper dived low to brilliantly parry a stinging long-range effort from Morocco’s Neil El Aynaoui. Before the African side could capitalize on the loose ball, Alisson reacted with lightning reflexes to smother Ayoube Amaimouni’s close-range attempt on the rebound, ensuring both teams walked away with a well-deserved point.

The result leaves Group C wide open, with both teams demonstrating the pedigree required to make a deep run in the tournament, though both managers will arguably feel they did enough to secure all three points.
