The strategic summer expansion includes new lanes on Emirates Road, school zone upgrades, and intersection overhauls to match the city’s rapid urban growth.

DUBAI: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially commenced a major series of traffic ‘Quick Wins’ targeting 28 strategic locations across the emirate. Scheduled to roll out between July and September 2026, these rapid infrastructure interventions aim to drastically optimize the existing road network, boost operational safety, and streamline connectivity between residential hubs, major development zones, and schooling districts amidst Dubai’s surging population growth.

To minimize disruption to daily commuters, the RTA has intentionally capitalized on the lower traffic volumes typical of the summer holiday period. This tactical scheduling ensures accelerated project delivery timelines while significantly mitigating gridlock. The structural enhancements are meticulously distributed, targeting four high-traffic school zones, three rapidly growing development areas, and 21 critical choke points across the wider Dubai network.

The crown jewel of this summer’s traffic optimization blueprint is the extensive expansion of Emirates Road. The project introduces two brand-new lanes spanning a vital 5-kilometer stretch stretching from the Sharjah border down to Al Amardi Street. Given its status as a critical arterial corridor linking Dubai to neighboring northern emirates, the expansion is projected to slash peak-hour travel times by a massive 25% for thousands of daily inter-emirate commuters.

Simultaneously, major intersection overhauls are underway to elevate capacity in commercial and industrial nerve centers. Key focus areas include the high-density intersection of Trade Centre Street and Marasi Drive in Business Bay, traffic flow modifications on Latifa Bint Hamdan Street near Al Quoz Industrial Area, and crucial debottlenecking operations on Ras Al Khor Road heading toward Al Khail Road.

Residential areas will also experience immediate relief. The RTA is integrating a new traffic lane at the Al Khawaneej Street and Al Amardi Street junction, expanding Algeria Street in Al Mizhar 4 near the labor accommodation, and widening the right-turn slip road from Ras Al Khor Road onto the Dubai–Al Ain Road from one lane to two to eradicate persistent tailbacks. Furthermore, in preparation for the upcoming academic year, extensive parking infrastructure is being constructed for the Zayed Educational Complex in Al Mizhar 2 and Horizon International School in Umm Al Sheif to guarantee seamless, safer drop-offs and minimize peak school hour congestion.

The RTA’s ‘Quick Wins’ strategy highlights a modern, data-driven approach to urban planning, bypassing years of heavy construction for targeted, high-impact modifications. By leveraging cutting-edge intelligent transport systems, historical traffic telemetry, and real-time surveillance analytics alongside active public feedback, the authority continues to agilely adapt Dubai’s infrastructure to remain competitive on the global stage, aligning with the emirate’s broader long-term smart city objectives.
