The 15-year-old Indian cricket prodigy attended the Centre Court showpiece at the All England Club, drawing inspiration from global tennis icons.

LONDON: Indian cricket prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made his debut appearance at the Wimbledon Championships at Centre Court on Sunday, joining former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and fellow national team cricketers Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson to witness the men’s singles final. At just 15 years old, the young left-handed opening batter swapped his cricket whites for a formal suit arranged by his opening partner Sharma, using the grand sporting occasion to observe how elite athletes manage high-stakes pressure.

The teenage cricketer’s high-profile appearance at the All England Club follows his historic international debut last week, where he became the youngest player to represent India during the second T20I against England in Manchester. Speaking to official broadcaster JioStar at the venue, Sooryavanshi emphasized that his visit to the historic London venue was primarily an educational experience rather than a celebrity outing.

“I’m here to watch the final match and see what the experience is like, watching live and observing how players perform in the finals. It should be a great experience,” Sooryavanshi stated.

Tennis has played a significant role in the young batsman’s life for several years. He revealed that he grew up closely tracking the careers of multi-Grand Slam champions Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, though he specifically highlighted current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner as a contemporary favorite whose tournament dominance had impressed him.

Sharing insights into the lighter side of his maiden trip to SW19, Sooryavanshi credited his India opening partner Abhishek Sharma for coordinating his wardrobe for the formal event. When asked which cricketer he would choose to partner with in a hypothetical tennis doubles match, the teenager immediately selected Sharma, citing their established on-field chemistry.

Sooryavanshi’s presence at the tournament underscores a significant Indian cricketing contingent at Wimbledon this season. Legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar and current India captain Shubman Gill had previously attended the men’s singles semi-finals from the prestigious Royal Box.

The London excursion follows a demanding initial leg of senior international cricket for the 15-year-old opener. After making his debut in Manchester, Sooryavanshi faced challenging bowling conditions in subsequent matches at Nottingham and Bristol, registering scores of 15, 13, and 14.

India’s team management opted to adjust the lineup for the fifth T20I, replacing the youngster with wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson. Indian captain Shreyas Iyer clarified that the tactical shift was designed to optimize team balance by pairing the left-handed Abhishek Sharma with a right-handed batsman at the top of the order.
