Dubai:n a major boost to traffic efficiency and urban mobility, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the completion of a series of high-impact traffic enhancements linking Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road via Al Meydan Street — slashing travel times by up to 40% and easing congestion across several key corridors.

The upgrade comes as part of RTA’s ambitious 2025 master plan to deliver over 75 traffic improvement projects across the emirate. These latest improvements are designed to address rising mobility demands driven by Dubai’s fast-paced urban growth while reinforcing the city’s standing as a global leader in smart infrastructure and sustainable transport.

What’s New?
• Exit Expansion:
The exit from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Meydan Street (Exit D69) was widened from one lane to two, doubling its capacity from 1,500 to 3,000 vehicles per hour. Commuters now enjoy significantly faster journeys with up to 40% reduction in travel times during morning and evening rush hours.
• Bridge Boost:
The bridge over First Al Khail Road has been upgraded from three lanes to four in both directions, increasing capacity by over 33%—from 4,500 to 6,000 vehicles per hour. Peak-hour crossing times have dropped from seven minutes to just four, easing movement between Al Khail Road, Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Hadiqa Street, and Al Meydan Street.
• Ramp Enhancements:
Connecting ramps between surface roads and the bridge were also expanded from one lane to two, slashing waiting times by more than 50% during midday and evening peaks. This improvement ensures seamless connectivity for vehicles switching between Al Khail Road and Sheikh Zayed Road.

Strategic Urban Vision

These enhancements are not just about speed and convenience—they are part of a broader vision led by Dubai’s wise leadership to support sustainable urban development and enhanced quality of life. By investing in smart mobility infrastructure, RTA is helping to future-proof the city’s transport network for generations to come.

“With Dubai’s rapid population growth and continuous development, we are committed to staying ahead of mobility demands. This latest project is a clear example of our proactive approach to road network optimisation,” said an RTA spokesperson.

What’s Next?

The Al Meydan corridor upgrade is just one of more than 75 traffic improvement projects set for completion this year. As Dubai continues to evolve, RTA’s smart infrastructure roadmap is ensuring that the city remains connected, efficient, and ready for the future.
