The multi-million dirham infrastructure project includes widening lanes to five, building four new bridges, and expanding networks in Khalifa City.

ABU DHABI — The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has launched a massive infrastructure and road expansion project on the E20 highway to ease traffic congestion and streamline access to Zayed International Airport.

The main carriageway of the strategic highway will be widened from three lanes to five in each direction. Abu Dhabi transport authorities confirmed the project is designed to handle the emirate’s rapidly growing population and rising vehicular mobility demands.

The scope of work features the construction of four new bridges and 10.5 kilometers of additional ramps and loops to ensure seamless traffic transitions. To improve internal connectivity, engineers are building 1.5 kilometers of new internal roads alongside eight safety-enhanced traffic light junctions, primarily serving Khalifa City and the Zayed International Airport precinct.

Beyond the asphalt, the infrastructure upgrade integrates major utility developments. Contractors will install 62 kilometers of stormwater drainage networks to prevent flooding during heavy rains, alongside 37 kilometers of specialized irrigation networks. The project also includes the installation of 485 energy-efficient, modern streetlamps to boost night-time driving safety.

Environmental sustainability remains a core component of the expansion plan. The DMT announced that green spaces along the E20 corridor are being upgraded through extensive landscaping. This includes the careful relocation and replanting of existing trees to preserve the local ecosystem while accommodating the wider road footprint.
