The UN children’s agency puts AI rumors to rest regarding the iconic 2007 image ahead of the historic 2026 World Cup final showdown
NEW YORK / BARCELONA :UNICEF has officially confirmed that the viral photograph showing a young Lionel Messi bathing an infant Lamine Yamal is entirely genuine. The image has captivated football fans worldwide, sparking widespread debates across social media over whether the generation-spanning picture was an authentic historical artifact or a highly sophisticated AI-generated fabrication.
With both players set to lead their respective nations into the 2026 FIFA World Cup final this Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the United Nations children’s agency decided to clear up the speculation surrounding the image.
“Yes, those photos you’ve seen are real,” UNICEF confirmed in an official public statement.
The Story Behind the Photo
The iconic image dates back to late 2007 inside a dressing room at Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium. At the time, a 20-year-old Messi was already ascending into global superstardom with FC Barcelona. Lamine Yamal’s family, residing in Catalonia, had entered and won a charity raffle organized by the Spanish newspaper Diario Sport and UNICEF. The prize was a slot to feature in a promotional 2008 charity calendar, with 50 percent of the proceeds directly funding children’s rights programs worldwide.
Photographer Joan Monfort, who captured the historic moment, recalled that the infant Yamal was just five months old during the shoot. In the picture, Messi is seen alongside Yamal’s mother, Sheila Ebana, helping to bathe the smiling baby in a small blue plastic tub. The image remained largely forgotten for nearly two decades until Yamal’s father, Mounir Nasraoui, re-shared it during the 2024 European Championship with the prophetic caption: “The beginning of two legends.”
A Full-Circle World Cup Climax
The confirmation of the photo’s authenticity adds an extraordinary layer of narrative drama to the upcoming World Cup final. On Sunday, Messi’s defending champions Argentina will clash with Yamal’s Spain in a generational battle on football’s grandest stage.
Both superstars share deep professional foundations, both having graduated from Barcelona’s famed La Masia youth academy. Off the pitch, their ties to the United Nations have endured. Both Messi and Yamal serve as official UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors, using their global platforms to champion child welfare and the universal right to play.
