Brent crude slumps as renewed U.S.-Iran diplomatic efforts ease Middle East war-risk premiums and energy supply disruption fears.

LONDON / NEW YORK — Global crude oil benchmark Brent fell to $83.43 per barrel on Monday as renewed diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran alleviated immediate fears of major energy supply disruptions in the Middle East.

Trading data showed Brent futures dropping more than 4% from recent session highs, unwinding a significant portion of the war-risk premium that had driven energy prices upward in recent weeks. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude mirrored the decline, slipping toward $80 per barrel.

The market shift follows official confirmations of resumed diplomatic discussions aimed at stabilizing shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz—a vital maritime choke point that handles approximately one-fifth of the world’s petroleum transit. Easing geopolitical tension has reduced anxiety among energy traders regarding physical blockades and tanker targeting.

Adding further downward pressure on prices, the OPEC+ alliance of oil-producing nations recently agreed to maintain its planned schedule of monthly production quota increases. The gradual restoration of output by core members, combined with record production levels in the United States, has improved the global supply outlook for the second half of the year.

Economic analysts note that the decline in crude benchmark prices offers immediate relief to major energy-importing economies across Asia and Europe, potentially dampening headline inflation metrics. However, market participants remain cautious, monitoring ongoing high-level negotiations and weekly commercial stock reports from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) for long-term supply trends.
