Historic August 6, 1966 milestone laid the groundwork for the nation’s unification and rapid modernization.

ABU DHABI: UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan led national tributes on Thursday to mark the 60th anniversary of the accession of the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, as Ruler of Abu Dhabi.

The occasion marks a pivotal moment in the history of the Arabian Peninsula, when Sheikh Zayed assumed office on August 6, 1966, setting into motion six decades of economic transformation, social development, and the eventual federation of seven emirates into the United Arab Emirates in 1971.

Writing on social media platform X, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed recalled the foundational era that established the modern state.

“On this historic milestone, we recall the beginnings that nurtured our collective journey of progress and laid the foundations of the Union,” Sheikh Mohamed said. “Inspired by Sheikh Zayed’s leadership and vision, we will continue to advance his enduring belief that people must always be placed at the heart of efforts to build a sustainable and prosperous future for our nation.”

A Momentous Transition

When Sheikh Zayed assumed leadership of Abu Dhabi six decades ago, the emirate stood on the threshold of major economic development following the discovery of commercial oil reserves in the late 1950s. Rather than focusing wealth narrowly, Sheikh Zayed immediately directed early revenues toward building comprehensive public infrastructure, establishing healthcare facilities, opening schools, and building housing for citizens.

Prior to taking charge of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Zayed served as the Ruler’s Representative in the Eastern Region, centered in Al Ain, starting in 1946. His experience administering rural communities and engaging directly with Bedouin leaders established his reputation as an accessible, consensus-driven ruler focused on community welfare and sustainable development.

His accession in 1966 rapidly altered the trajectory of Abu Dhabi. Within five years of taking power, Sheikh Zayed worked alongside Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, then Ruler of Dubai, and leaders of the Northern Emirates to negotiate the political unification of the Trucial States. This diplomatic effort culminated in the formation of the United Arab Emirates on December 2, 1971, with Sheikh Zayed unanimously elected as the country’s first President.

Building a Legacy Focused on Human Capital

Throughout his 38-year reign as Ruler of Abu Dhabi and 33 years as UAE President until his death in November 2004, Sheikh Zayed consistently prioritized human development over physical assets. His governing philosophy linked natural resource wealth directly to educational access, medical care, environmental preservation, and international humanitarian assistance.

Senior UAE officials and diplomatic advisers noted on Thursday that Sheikh Zayed’s core governance principles remain central to the country’s current developmental strategy. The nation’s ongoing investments in renewable energy, space exploration, artificial intelligence, and advanced infrastructure are directly tied to the foundational mandate set in 1966.

National commemorations and cultural events marking the 60th accession anniversary are taking place across public institutions and educational centers throughout the UAE, highlighting historic archives and reflections on the Founding Father’s leadership legacy.
