New research reveals shifting preferences among Chinese travelers, with luxury and solo journeys leading a gradual rebound across the MENA region.

DUBAI, August 6, 2026:Middle East and North Africa tourism operators are positioning themselves for a sustained recovery in Chinese outbound travel, as updated market research highlights strong underlying demand despite recent geopolitical head winds.

According to a study conducted by Dragon Trail International, the official research partner of Arabian Travel Market (ATM), 77% of surveyed travel agents reported an increase in Chinese outbound travel demand during the first half of 2026 compared to the previous year. Official data from China’s National Immigration Administration supports this trend, recording a 10.7% year-on-year rise in mainland border crossings over the same period.

Although regional geopolitical tensions temporarily softened travel to parts of the Middle East, Chinese authorities have officially lifted travel advisories for Arabian Gulf nations. Industry analysts expect a phased recovery as safety perceptions stabilize, with momentum building into 2027.

Luxury travel is projected to lead the rebound. Dragon Trail’s research indicates that 42% of Chinese travel agents identify high-net-worth individuals as the most resilient segment. Solo travelers (40%), group tours (38%), and younger demographics (38%) also present clear growth opportunities for regional destinations.

Bookings reflect changing consumer habits, featuring shorter lead times and higher demand for single-destination itineraries. While Turkey has emerged as a swift beneficiary following new visa-exemption policies, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates retain strong long-term appeal, particularly within the high-end leisure market.

Danielle Curtis, Exhibition Director ME for ATM organizer RX Global, emphasized the structural importance of the market: “China remains one of the world’s most influential outbound tourism markets. While recent developments caused short-term recalibrations, the long-term fundamentals remain strong. Destinations that adapt to evolving consumer behaviors will capture the next wave of growth.”

These findings will be presented during ATM 2026, scheduled from September 14 to 17 at the Dubai World Trade Centre. Held under the theme “Travel 2040: New Horizons through Innovation and Technology,” the 33rd edition features an expanded footprint, including a 14% increase in Asian exhibitor participation. Key Chinese entities attending include the Macao Government Tourism Office, Guangzhou City, China Highlights, and DerbySoft.
