Kerala Youth Congress president and Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil’s resignation was announced on Thursday following harassment allegations raised by actor Rini Ann George and writer Honey Bhaskaran.
Rini Ann George, a Malayalam actor and former journalist, had alleged that a youth leader from a major political party sent her offensive messages and even invited her to a hotel. Though she did not name him directly, the BJP staged a protest march to Rahul Mamkootathil’s office, accusing him of being the leader in question. DYFI, the youth wing of CPI(M), also marched to his Palakkad office demanding his resignation.
Soon after, writer Honey Bhaskaran came forward with similar allegations, naming Mamkootathil. She claimed he repeatedly messaged her and later misrepresented their conversations. Honey alleged that multiple complaints had been filed against him within the Youth Congress, but no action was taken.
Announcing his resignation, Mamkootathil said he was stepping down not because he was guilty, but to ensure the party could focus on its upcoming responsibilities. “Party workers have a lot of work ahead of the assembly and panchayat elections. They cannot waste time defending me. This is my personal decision, and no party leader asked me to resign,” he said, adding that the Youth Congress will continue to fight strongly against the CPI(M) government.
