The Malayalam film industry is gearing up for a packed Onam season with five new releases scheduled to hit theatres, promising a festive battle between young stars and established superstars. After weeks of relatively low footfall since Mohanlal’s Thudarum exited cinemas, both audiences and industry stakeholders are hopeful for a blockbuster comeback.
Hridayapoorvam (Releasing August 28)

Directed by Sathyan Anthikad, Hridayapoorvam marks his much-awaited reunion with Mohanlal after nearly a decade. The family drama follows Mohanlal’s heartfelt journey post-heart surgery, blending humour and sentiment in signature Anthikad style. The film has wrapped its final mix and recently dropped its teaser alongside a soulful song titled Venmathi, both of which have stirred festive buzz. With a star-studded cast including Malavika Mohanan, Sangita Madhavan Nair, Siddique, and Lalu Alex, and surprise cameos by Meera Jasmine and Basil Joseph, the film promises to be a festival favourite.
Odum Kuthira Chaadum Kuthira (Releasing August 29)

This whimsical rom-com, directed by Althaf Salim, stars Fahadh Faasil and Kalyani Priyadarshan in their first pairing. The story unfolds as a quirky love tale with a chaotic twist, triggered by a search for a dreamy white horse. The trailer offers a blend of fantasy and comedy, while a leaked acting workshop video—showing the cast recreating an iconic scene from Mookkilla Rajyathu—has gone viral, adding to the anticipation.
Lokah – Chapter 1: Chandra (Releasing August 28)

A genre-defining project, Lokah – Chapter 1: Chandra brings India’s first female-led Malayalam superhero to the screen. Directed by Dominic Arun under Dulquer Salmaan’s Wayfarer Films, the film features Kalyani Priyadarshan as Chandra, backed by Naslen. With striking visuals, doubled by music from Jakes Bejoy and cinematography by Nimish Ravi, the film is designed to launch a new superhero universe. There are also whispers of cameos by Dulquer Salmaan, Tovino Thomas—and perhaps even Mammootty—building major pre-release interest.
Maine Pyaar Kiya (Releasing August 29)

Directed by Faizal Faziludeen, this romantic comedy adds youthful flair to the Onam lineup. Starring Hridhu Haroon opposite newcomer Preity Mukhundhan, the film blends romance with unexpected twists in an engaging narrative. With vibrant music, crisp editing, and dynamic visuals, this fresh entry caters to younger audiences looking for fun and light-hearted storytelling.
