Dubai witnessed dramatic weather on Wednesday, September 3, as heavy rains, hail, lightning, and thunder struck several areas of the emirate. The unstable conditions are part of a broader shift in weather patterns currently affecting the UAE, according to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM).
Downpour and Low Visibility Reported
Motorists traveling towards the Hatta region reported waterlogging and reduced visibility as heavy rain lashed roads. Visuals showed overflowing water along the sides of highways, making driving conditions hazardous.
In Dubai’s Margham area, residents experienced a striking combination of hail, lightning, and intense rainfall, footage of which was shared by Storm Centre on social media.
Why the Weather Shifted
The NCM explained that the UAE is under the influence of surface and upper-level low-pressure systems from the south, combined with the northward movement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). This has allowed moist air masses from the Arabian Sea and the Sea of Oman to flow into the country, triggering unstable conditions.
Alerts and Warnings Issued
The meteorology authority issued orange and yellow weather alerts, warning residents to remain cautious, especially during outdoor activities. Strong winds of up to 45 km/h were reported, causing blowing dust, sand, and further reduced visibility in some eastern areas.
Temperature Extremes Across the UAE
Despite the rains, the country experienced wide temperature variations. The highest temperature recorded on Wednesday was 46.5°C in Sweihan (Al Ain) at 2:45 p.m., while the lowest was 22.9°C in Raknah (Al Ain) at 5:30 a.m.
Rain Forecast Until Friday
The NCM forecast predicts that unstable weather will continue until Friday, September 5. Residents in eastern and southern regions can expect further rainfall, extending into some internal areas. Convective clouds are also expected to form, leading to rainfall of varying intensities, occasional lightning, thunder, and even small hail, particularly on Thursday.
