Imagine passing through airport security without removing your laptop or throwing away liquids — this will soon become reality at Dubai International Airport (DXB).
New Security Technology at DXB
Dubai Airports has confirmed a phased plan to introduce state-of-the-art scanners and AI-powered screening systems across all three terminals by the end of 2026. These advanced systems will allow passengers to keep electronics, perfumes, creams, and even liquids over 100ml inside their bags during security checks.
Essa Al Shamsi, Senior Vice President for Terminal Operations at Dubai Airports, explained:
“This new technology will make travel easier, smoother, and stress-free as you don’t have to take anything out of your bag.”
Contract Awarded for Cutting-Edge Systems
In May 2025, Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects awarded a contract to Smiths Detection to install these advanced checkpoint screening technologies. The scanners use high-resolution 3D imaging, significantly reducing processing times while maintaining the highest levels of security.
Why the Upgrade Matters
Passenger traffic at DXB is surging, with 46 million travellers handled in the first half of 2025 — the busiest first half in the airport’s history. In April alone, 8 million people passed through the terminals, marking the busiest April ever.
With this growth, Dubai Airports is prioritizing innovation to ensure a faster, smoother, and more seamless travel experience for its passengers.
Trials Already Underway
The new scanners are currently being trialled at Terminal 3, used exclusively by Emirates Airlines. The project involves replacing nearly 140 machines, requiring significant infrastructure changes, which explains the step-by-step rollout.
AI to Improve Efficiency Beyond Security
Alongside passenger screening upgrades, Dubai Airports is also working on AI-powered systems to reduce aircraft turnaround times and boost overall operational efficiency. These innovations underline Dubai’s position as a global leader in aviation technology.
