India has elected CP Radhakrishnan, a seasoned Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician, as the country’s next Vice President, weeks after Jagdeep Dhankhar’s abrupt resignation. Radhakrishnan secured 452 of the 766 valid votes in the 781-member electoral college, decisively defeating opposition-backed former Supreme Court judge Sudershan Reddy, who received 300 votes. The election marks a significant political event, as it follows speculation and controversy surrounding Dhankhar’s sudden departure from the post he held since August 2022.
CP Radhakrishnan, 68, currently serving as the Governor of Maharashtra, has been a long-time political figure in the BJP, with strong ties to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). His political career spans decades, having served as the BJP state president in Tamil Nadu and elected twice as a Member of Parliament from Coimbatore in 1998 and 1999. Known for his congenial approach and ability to engage across party lines, Radhakrishnan is expected to bring stability and experience to the constitutional role.
The vice-presidential election took place in the presence of 754 voters, of which 15 votes were invalid. The electoral college, composed of members from both houses of parliament, voted amid heightened political attention due to the controversy surrounding the resignation of Dhankhar. While Dhankhar cited ill health as the reason for stepping down, opposition Congress leaders suggested “far deeper reasons,” hinting at political discord with the BJP leadership. Home Minister Amit Shah, however, dismissed such claims, accusing the opposition of politicizing the issue without evidence.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Radhakrishnan on his victory, stating that he would make an “outstanding vice president” and strengthen India’s constitutional values. As Vice President, Radhakrishnan will also serve as Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha, India’s upper house of parliament, and act as President in the event of a vacancy. He will be required to resign as Maharashtra Governor prior to being sworn in for a full five-year term.
Radhakrishnan’s election is seen as a consolidation of the BJP-led alliance’s influence in the parliament, reinforcing their legislative strength and providing continuity in governance. Analysts note that his experience in parliamentary affairs and reputation for affability will be critical as he navigates the non-partisan role of moderating the Rajya Sabha debates and ensuring constitutional decorum.
