The transaction lifts EGA’s global recycling capacity above 400,000 tonnes a year as demand for low-carbon metal accelerates across Europe

ABU DHABI — Emirates Global Aluminium has closed its acquisition of an 80 percent controlling stake in Italian recycling specialist Eco Green after securing all necessary regulatory approvals, the company said on Thursday.

The deal, first signaled in April, extends the UAE industrial heavyweight’s operational footprint across Europe’s scrap processing chain and pushes its worldwide recycling capacity beyond 400,000 tonnes per year across facilities in the UAE, Germany, the United States, and Italy.

EGA currently has another 200,000 tonnes of recycling capacity in development across its global network.

The Italian company will be rebranded as EGA Eco Green. Founded in 1993 by the Scappini family, who retain a 20 percent minority interest and operational roles, the business operates two processing plants in northeast Italy and distributes upwards of 70,000 tonnes of material annually.

Its sorting hub in Villafranca di Verona processes and distributes roughly 23,000 tonnes of scrap each year. A portion of that volume feeds a second facility in nearby Nogara di Verona, which casts more than 20,000 tonnes of secondary aluminium sows annually against a nameplate furnace capacity of 30,000 tonnes, while handling industrial dross. An ongoing expansion at Nogara is set to add 20,000 tonnes of secondary capacity by December 2026.

Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, Chief Executive Officer of EGA, pointed to Eco Green’s localized scrap sourcing network as a critical link for the group’s downstream expansion on the continent.

“Eco Green makes EGA an even better partner for Europe’s green future and further expands our growing global aluminium recycling business,” Bin Kalban said. “Eco Green also brings us capability in Europe’s aluminium scrap market, which is important for our expanding recycling operations in the continent.”

Europe, excluding Russia, ranks as the third-largest consumer of recycled aluminium behind China and the United States. EGA already holds a sizable commercial presence in the European market, shipping roughly 600,000 tonnes of primary aluminium to industrial clients there each year.

The Italian closing follows a string of international capital deployments by EGA to secure low-carbon secondary production. In 2024, the group bought German secondary specialist EGA Leichtmetall, where it launched a six-fold capacity expansion. That same year, it acquired an 80 percent stake in US-based EGA Spectro Alloys, which completed a major output upgrade in July 2025 to reach 165,000 tonnes annually, with a second phase targeting an extra 35,000 tonnes of billet capacity by 2027.

Domestically, EGA is bringing online its flagship Al Taweelah recycling facility in Abu Dhabi, designed with an annual capacity of 185,000 tonnes, marking the largest recycling operation in the Emirates.
