UAE Halts Iranian Airlines and International Carriers Reroute as US-Iran Friction Rattles Energy and Aviation

Major UAE hubs stay operational while carriers adjust networks, Brent crude tops $106, and shipping faces persistent pressure across the Strait of Hormuz.

DUBAI, Sept. 25, 2026 : The United Arab Emirates has suspended all commercial passenger and cargo flights operated by Iranian carriers to and from the country until further notice, following regulatory interventions triggered by US sanctions against Iranian aviation operators.

The directive, enforced by the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) starting September 24, introduces the most direct operational fallout yet for regional aviation connections between the UAE and Iran. The GCAA confirmed that the measure remains open-ended and will depend on ongoing regulatory and security assessments.

While Iranian carriers remain grounded across domestic runways, the country’s primary international hubs—including Dubai International (DXB), Al Maktoum International (DWC), and Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi—remain fully operational. Commercial carriers continue landing and departing across core regional and intercontinental corridors, though airlines are enforcing route diversions to steer clear of sensitive airspace.

Emirates and Etihad Airways are running regular timetables across key destinations, including major routes into South Asia, Europe, and the Far East. Even so, flight tracking updates indicate longer sector run-times on select journeys due to modified navigational waypoints. Budget carrier flydubai is operating an amended schedule, alerting passengers that reconfigured flight paths will increase gate-to-gate travel times and alter transit connections.

Airlines emphasize that local scheduling hiccups can stem from standard technical problems rather than geopolitics. An Etihad flight on the Abu Dhabi–Beirut route experienced technical maintenance holds on September 24, highlighting that not every isolated boarding delay is tied to airspace restrictions.

The foreign carrier footprint across the Gulf remains uneven. Several global operators have pushed back their return to UAE skies:

  • Air France: Services to Dubai suspended through October 13.
  • KLM, Singapore Airlines, SWISS, and ITA Airways: Dubai operations halted through October 24.
  • Wizz Air: Expected to resume Dubai services on October 25 and Abu Dhabi on October 27.
  • Eurowings: Services paused through October 24, targeting a November 1 restart.
  • Air Canada: Dubai flights suspended through mid-January 2027.
  • Philippine Airlines: Manila–Dubai rotations set to resume on October 2 with four weekly services.
  • Turkish Airlines: Flights to Dubai and Abu Dhabi operate normally, though its direct links into Tehran remain suspended.

Beyond terminal gates, the regional escalation is rippling through energy markets. Brent crude advanced above $106 per barrel on Friday as commodity desks weighed halting US-Iran diplomatic exchanges against fresh Houthi drone and missile strikes targeting Saudi Arabian infrastructure.

Tanker flows across the Strait of Hormuz remain significantly below historic averages. A growing number of commercial vessels continue to turn off their automated identification system (AIS) transponders when navigating high-risk shipping lanes, complicating live maritime risk models.

Saudi Arabia has accelerated crude transfers via its East-West Pipeline toward the Red Sea port of Yanbu to circumvent Persian Gulf maritime bottlenecks. However, repeated Houthi attacks targeting Red Sea maritime logistics and pipeline infrastructure threaten to squeeze the kingdom’s alternative export corridors.

For consumers and businesses across the UAE, sustained commodity volatility could gradually feed into domestic transport fuel prices and retail logistics costs. Port operators continue monitoring international marine insurance premiums, as extended war-risk surcharges threaten to nudge import pricing upward if regional tensions do not de-escalate.
