Dubai: Majid Al Futtaim, the Dubai-based retail and leisure conglomerate, has confirmed that Carrefour operations in the UAE will continue without disruption, despite the recent closure of the French supermarket brand in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Jordan. The company, which holds exclusive rights to operate Carrefour across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, clarified that there are “no immediate plans” to exit the UAE market, where Carrefour remains one of the most popular retail chains.
The clarification came from Günther Helm, CEO of Majid Al Futtaim Retail, during an interview on Dubai Eye’s Business Breakfast. He explained that the decision to close operations in four Gulf markets was not financially motivated but rather aligned with meeting customer needs and adapting to evolving market dynamics. This statement marked the company’s first official response following speculation about the closures.
To fill the retail gap left by Carrefour in the affected markets, Majid Al Futtaim has launched HyperMax, its proprietary grocery retail brand. The move underscores the group’s strategy to diversify offerings while maintaining its strong presence in the region. In the UAE, Carrefour continues to expand and serve as a cornerstone of the country’s retail sector, catering to millions of residents and visitors.
The announcement is expected to reassure Carrefour’s UAE customer base and stakeholders, reinforcing the brand’s long-term commitment to the Emirates even as Majid Al Futtaim reshapes its regional portfolio.
