Gulf Crisis: Rising Fuel Costs, Freight Surcharges and Flight Disruptions Hit UAE Daily Life

Airports and ports remain operational under strict security protocols, but escalating maritime risks in Hormuz and Bab Al Mandab are pushing up consumer prices and utility bills.

DUBAI, Oct. 6, 2026 :Daily life across the United Arab Emirates is feeling the direct economic strain of the escalating military standoff between the United States and Iran, as residents contend with rising utility charges, higher pump prices, and localized flight cancellations despite international transport hubs operating near regular capacity.

Commercial aviation hubs including Dubai International (DXB), Al Maktoum International (DWC), and Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International (AUH) continue standard terminal services, though regional routing changes have triggered sporadic delays. According to directives issued by the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), flights operated by Iranian carriers remain suspended indefinitely.

Aviation schedules in the Middle East bear the heaviest operational disruption. Emirates and Etihad Airways have halted scheduled flights to Beirut through at least October 8, alongside cancellations on sectors servicing Baghdad, Basra, and Amman. Etihad confirmed that regional airspace adjustments have triggered cascading arrival delays across long-haul corridors connecting London, Bangkok, Delhi, and Karachi.

Foreign carriers continue to operate curtailed networks across the Levant. Emirates is maintaining approximately 98% of its network destinations and 93% of scheduled weekly frequencies across 140 destinations in 72 countries, instructing passengers to verify booking status prior to airport check-in.

At sea, commercial operations through the Strait of Hormuz face severe logistical constraints. Maritime assessment monitors categorize the waterway under a “Restricted” advisory level. Crude and petroleum transit volumes have fallen to an estimated 13.1 million barrels per day, down from pre-crisis baselines of roughly 17.1 million barrels per day. Off the coast of Oman, over 100 supertankers have faced holding periods stretching up to 10 days to secure passage, clearance, and war-risk insurance cover.

Inbound Gulf freight rates have climbed between 300% and 500% over standard commercial baselines. Logistics firms attribute the surge to emergency risk premiums, bunker fuel adjustments, and cargo diversions through alternative processing facilities at Fujairah, Khor Fakkan, and Omani ports.

These logistics expenses are filtering into local retail pricing. Official consumer price data in Dubai indicates food and beverage inflation running between 4% and 9.6%, propelled directly by import surcharges. Retail chains warn that complimentary home delivery thresholds could be curtailed as domestic distribution costs rise.

Consumers also face cumulative utility and mobility expenses. Domestic retail fuel benchmarks climbed for a third consecutive month entering October, lifting transport and commercial haulage expenses. Concurrently, regional power distribution networks have factored in a 6 fils per kilowatt-hour fuel adjustment surcharge, elevating monthly bills for mid-tier and high-consumption residential accounts.

Regional security risks expanded further on Tuesday following reports that Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces advanced toward positions along the Bab Al Mandab strait, dislodging Houthi units from adjacent high ground. Houthi forces claimed retaliatory strikes against Saudi civil infrastructure, including regional airports and a refinery facility, though independent military sources have not validated the extent of damage.

The security perimeter widened diplomatically on Monday after Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia declared a joint mutual defense arrangement providing for immediate troop deployments to support the kingdom’s territorial integrity.

While Gulf infrastructure exhibits resilience against complete closures, operational viability centers on commercial maritime risk thresholds, insurance underwriting viability, and stability across crucial transit corridors spanning both Hormuz and the Red Sea.
