Falling debris damages 15 homes in the capital, while separate aerial attacks target Dhahran energy facilities and southern governorates

RIYADH, Oct. 14 : Saudi air defense units intercepted a ballistic missile fired toward Riyadh on Wednesday, hours after knocking down incoming cruise missiles and drones that scattered shrapnel across residential neighborhoods and wounded four people.

The latest projectile aimed at the capital was destroyed mid-air, according to Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen. Following the interception, the Saudi General Directorate of Civil Defense lifted public danger alerts previously issued for Riyadh and the neighboring Al-Kharj Governorate via the National Early Warning Platform.

Blasts echoed across Riyadh shortly before midnight on Tuesday as defense batteries engaged multiple hostile targets. Debris from two intercepted cruise missiles fell across an area encompassing roughly 15 homes, injuring four residents, Civil Defense officials confirmed. Photographic evidence published by authorities showed fractured masonry, broken glass, and structural damage to private residential compounds. Another cruise missile was brought down over Al-Kharj early Wednesday.

The barrage formed part of an expanded cross-border wave launched by the Iran-aligned Houthi movement. Air defense units intercepted ballistic projectiles aimed at the eastern oil hub of Dhahran and the Haradh district on Tuesday. An administrative building owned by state energy producer Saudi Aramco in Dhahran sustained an attempted strike, though the Saudi Ministry of Energy reported no casualties or structural interruptions to operations. Coalition forces also intercepted three explosive-laden drones tracking north of Riyadh late Tuesday evening.

The Saudi Cabinet, convening in a session chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, warned that the militia would face direct consequences for sustained attacks on civilian and economic infrastructure. Cabinet ministers reiterated their commitment to safeguarding merchant shipping through the southern Red Sea and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait, affirming support for coalition measures aimed at neutralizing maritime and aerial risks.

Tensions have escalated sharply since the weekend, following a strike on King Khalid International Airport that killed 13 people and wounded more than 300 travelers. That incident struck a passenger terminal crowded with international travelers and religious pilgrims en route to Makkah and Madinah. The kingdom’s General Authority of Civil Aviation identified the dead as four Saudi nationals, two Bangladeshi citizens, and individuals from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, the Palestinian territories, Syria, and Sudan. A secondary assault on the airport the following day killed a Pakistani civilian.

Houthi forces have targeted regional transport nodes throughout the week, directing fire against Abha International Airport in southern Saudi Arabia and Aden International Airport in Yemen. The group had resumed extensive cross-border military operations in July, threatening a total blockade of Saudi oil transit via the southern gateway of the Red Sea.

Security around strategic infrastructure has intensified following earlier incidents, including a drone downed south of Makkah in September and an unmanned aircraft attack that damaged an electrical substation serving the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah earlier this month.
