Road signs replaced and speed cameras recalibrated as three corridors see increased limits while two face reductions
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Motorists across Dubai face updated speed limits on five major corridors starting Sunday, November 1, as transport authorities adjust thresholds and reprogram traffic enforcement cameras.
The revised regulations cover designated sectors in both directions. Speed limits will increase on three roads and decrease on two others. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) confirmed that physical signage along all affected routes will be replaced, with automated radar systems recalibrated to match the new legal benchmarks.
Under the revisions, the speed limit on Al Asayel Street rises from 60 km/h to 80 km/h. Limits on both Al Mustaqbal Street and Latifa bint Hamdan Street increase from 60 km/h to 70 km/h.
Conversely, two key corridors will see mandatory reductions. The limit on Al Rebat Street drops from 100 km/h to 90 km/h, while Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street decreases from 80 km/h to 70 km/h. Drivers navigating these sectors are urged to remain alert to the lower thresholds to avoid automated penalties.
Dubai Police enforces road speeds using two distinct metrics: the posted road speed limit displayed on physical signboards and the radar control speed. On most major Dubai roads, radar cameras activate at a buffer threshold typically set 20 km/h above the posted sign. On an 80 km/h road, for example, radar flash triggers at 101 km/h. Authorities caution that this buffer is an enforcement threshold rather than permission to exceed statutory limits.
Violations recorded beyond applicable enforcement limits incur strict federal traffic penalties under UAE law:
- Exceeding the limit by up to 20 km/h: Dh300
- Exceeding by up to 30 km/h: Dh600
- Exceeding by up to 40 km/h: Dh700
- Exceeding by up to 50 km/h: Dh1,000
- Exceeding by up to 60 km/h: Dh1,500, six black points, and a 15-day vehicle impoundment
- Exceeding by more than 60 km/h: Dh2,000, 12 black points, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment
- Exceeding by more than 80 km/h: Dh3,000, 23 black points, and a 60-day vehicle impoundment
Motorists traveling through the affected corridors are advised to watch roadside signage closely as enforcement switches over on Sunday.
