Ethiopian runners continued their dominance at the Dubai Marathon, securing a fifth consecutive Ethiopian double in the Middle East’s biggest road race. In the men’s elite category, Nibret Melak claimed gold with an impressive time of 2:04:00, while Asefa Desse topped the women’s race, clocking a personal best of 2:18:31.
Melak’s victory was particularly remarkable as it marked his marathon debut, making him the 11th debutant to win the Dubai Marathon since its inception in 1998. Displaying strong form throughout the race, Melak finished ahead of fellow Ethiopian Yasin Haji (2:05:52), with Rwanda’s John Hakizimana taking bronze in 2:06:04. Trained alongside Ethiopian Olympic champion Tamirat Tola in Addis Ababa, Melak said his long-term ambition is to break the world record.
In the women’s elite race, Desse delivered a masterclass performance, holding off strong competition from compatriots to seal her third consecutive marathon victory, following wins in Seville and Beijing. Fellow Ethiopians Mule Degefa (2:18:43) and Fantu Worku (2:19:08) completed a clean sweep of the podium.
Supported by the Dubai Sports Council, the marathon attracted elite runners from around the world, alongside thousands of participants in the 10km road race and 4km fun run, creating a festive atmosphere across the city. Winners Melak and Desse received their trophies at the conclusion of the event.
