Abu Dhabi is preparing to introduce electric sea gliders for travel above its waters, marking a new era in coastal transportation and connectivity. The initiative is a collaboration between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), Integrated Transport Center (Abu Dhabi Mobility), and Vers Advanced Maritime Services, a leading UAE maritime technology company developing the gliders.
The first phase of the service will connect Abu Dhabi city with the Al Dhafra region, with plans to expand operations across the emirate in the second phase. The electric sea gliders are designed to fly at altitudes ranging from 4 meters to 150 meters above the water and can accommodate five to six passengers per trip.
Being fully electric, the sea gliders produce zero emissions, offering an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional transport. Vers has been developing electric sea gliders in the UAE since 2022, and under the new agreement, the company will conduct detailed studies on the environmental, commercial, and operational feasibility of deploying the gliders. The project is expected to commence commercial operations across the emirate by 2028.
This innovative project aims to enhance coastal mobility while improving connectivity between key regions, positioning Abu Dhabi as a global leader in sustainable, futuristic transport solutions.
