With the Puthuyuga Yatra led by Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan poised to take off from Kasaragod, the United Democratic Front (UDF) has moved swiftly to settle a crucial political question—the choice of its candidate for the constituency. Reports indicate that the UDF has arrived at a consensus to nominate Kallatra Mahin Haji, the Indian Union Muslim League’s District President, as its Kasaragod candidate.
The decision marks a strategic shift from earlier speculation surrounding IUML State Secretary K.M. Shaji’s possible candidature. Political observers note that the leadership grew cautious amid indications that Shaji’s entry could trigger consolidation of Hindu votes in favour of the BJP in a straight fight. This assessment reportedly led the IUML to step back from the initial plan.
Seeking to strengthen its electoral prospects, the IUML instead favoured a locally rooted leader with organisational strength and cross-community appeal. Kallatra Mahin Haji, who also serves as the UDF District Chairman, fit this profile. His long-standing presence in district politics and reputation as a soft-spoken consensus builder helped secure support across coalition partners.
IUML State President Panakkad Syed Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal is believed to have played a key role in the process. During his recent visit to Kasaragod for the Samastha centenary conference, Thangal held consultations with local leadership and gauged grassroots opinion before moving forward with the decision.
Finalising the candidate before the launch of the Opposition Leader’s yatra is seen as a calculated move to project unity and preparedness. Sources suggest that the backing of both Samastha factions and Mahin Haji’s public acceptability weighed heavily in his favour, as the UDF prepares for a high-stakes contest in Kasaragod.
