A 31-year-old man from California has been identified as the suspect in a shooting incident near the high-profile White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington, raising fresh concerns over security at one of the most tightly protected events in the US capital.
Law enforcement officials, cited by The New York Times, named the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen of Torrance, California. Authorities say he was taken into custody after attempting to breach a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton, where the annual event was being held.
According to investigators, the suspect did not enter the main ballroom, where Donald Trump and hundreds of guests were gathered at the time. He was intercepted near the screening area and subdued by security personnel after firing multiple rounds inside the hotel complex.
Officials said the attacker was armed with multiple weapons and appeared to be acting alone. Early assessments indicate a “lone wolf” scenario, although authorities have cautioned that the investigation remains ongoing.
Speaking after the incident, Donald Trump described the suspect as “a sick person” and confirmed that federal agents were searching his residence and examining his background.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said prosecutors are preparing multiple federal charges related to firearms possession and the shooting. He noted that additional charges could follow as evidence is analysed.
Meanwhile, Kash Patel confirmed that investigators are reviewing ballistic evidence and conducting witness interviews. Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist the probe.
The incident left one Secret Service officer injured after being struck in a bullet-resistant vest. Officials said the officer is expected to recover, and no other injuries have been reported.
Federal agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, are now examining how the suspect managed to approach a secured screening area with weapons. The breach occurred near a magnetometer checkpoint, just meters away from the main event space.
Investigators are also analysing the suspect’s digital footprint, personal history, and any potential affiliations to determine a motive. Authorities have not ruled out further charges, including attempted murder and assault on a federal officer, as the case develops.
The White House Correspondents’ dinner, attended by senior political leaders, journalists, and public figures, is regarded as one of the most secure events in Washington. Officials say the fact that the suspect was stopped before entering the ballroom will be a critical element in the ongoing investigation.
