Renaming of CMO Media Group Sparks Speculation Over Outgoing Kerala CM’s Political Future
Thiruvananthapuram: Speculation is mounting within Kerala’s political circles over whether outgoing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will take over as the Leader of the Opposition after the Left Democratic Front’s electoral setback.
The discussion gained momentum after the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) WhatsApp media group was renamed as the “Opposition Media” group. It was also communicated that all official communication from the Opposition side would now be channelled through the renamed platform.
While senior CPM leaders have declined to clarify whether the move signals Pinarayi’s next political role, the development has fuelled speculation that the veteran leader may continue to play a central role inside the Assembly.
“You don’t have to read too much into this. It is just that we cannot use the title Chief Minister from now on,” a senior CPM leader reportedly said when asked about the renaming of the media group.
However, when questioned why the group was not dissolved altogether, the leader pointed to practical reasons. “We already have the entire media contingent in this group. The office of the new Opposition Leader will find it easier,” he said.
Until now, political observers widely believed that Pinarayi Vijayan would gradually step into a semi-retired role after the LDF’s defeat, similar to the path taken by former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy following the UDF’s loss in 2016.
As a result, discussions surrounding the Opposition Leader post had largely excluded Pinarayi. Instead, former Finance Minister K N Balagopal emerged as the frontrunner for the position, particularly after several influential CPM leaders, including K K Shylaja and P Rajeev, failed to secure political momentum in the new landscape.
Political insiders, however, believe that regardless of who ultimately occupies the Opposition Leader’s chair, the decision will largely depend on Pinarayi Vijayan’s approval. Given his continuing influence within the CPM, any aspirant for the role would require his backing.
At the same time, party veterans note that it would not be unprecedented for a former CPM Chief Minister to return as Opposition Leader.
Legendary communist leader E M S Namboodiripad served as Opposition Leader after his terms as Chief Minister in both the 1960s and 1970s. Similarly, V S Achuthanandan assumed the Opposition Leader’s role in 2011 after the LDF lost power under his leadership.
Supporters of the possibility argue that, like EMS and VS in their respective eras, Pinarayi remains the tallest leader in the party and could continue to guide the CPM from the Opposition benches.
Age, party insiders say, may not be a major consideration either. VS Achuthanandan was 87 when he became Opposition Leader in 2011, while Pinarayi Vijayan is currently 80.
Still, not everyone within political circles is convinced. Critics argue that appointing Pinarayi as Opposition Leader could be seen as ignoring the electorate’s call for change, especially after a verdict that signalled a demand for new leadership and direction in Kerala politics.
Whether the CPM opts for continuity through Pinarayi Vijayan or chooses a generational transition in the Assembly leadership is expected to become clearer in the coming days.
