Congress High Command Entrusts Paravur MLA with Leadership Following UDF’s Resounding Assembly Victory

NEW DELHI / THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Bringing an end to ten days of intense political lobbying and nationwide speculation, the Congress High Command on Thursday officially announced senior leader V.D. Satheesan as the Chief Minister-designate of Kerala.

The formal announcement was made during a press conference at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters in New Delhi by AICC Kerala in-charge Deepa Dasmunshi, alongside central observers Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik. Satheesan, who has represented the Paravur Assembly constituency since 2001, will assume the role of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader, clearing the path for government formation in the state.

State-Wide Celebrations Erupt

V.D. Satheesan was at the Cantonment House in Thiruvananthapuram, the official residence of the Leader of the Opposition, alongside his family when the decision from New Delhi was made public.

As news filtered through, jubilant scenes were witnessed across Kerala. Congress party workers and United Democratic Front (UDF) supporters gathered in large numbers, bursting firecrackers and distributing sweets. In his home turf of Paravur, celebrations reached a grand scale, with crowds donning t-shirts and holding placards bearing the face of the new Chief Minister-designate.

A Mandate for Collective Responsibility

Speaking to the press shortly after the announcement, Satheesan expressed his gratitude toward the party leadership, including Rahul Gandhi, emphasizing that the position was a profound responsibility rather than a personal milestone.

“The mandate given by the people of Kerala is a massive responsibility. They have brought us to power with 102 seats, ending the LDF government’s ten-year rule. I do not see this position as a personal achievement, but as a collective responsibility. What made this possible is the unified effort of Team UDF and the lakhs of grassroots Congress workers who stood firmly with us,” Satheesan stated.

He further extended his appreciation to other top contenders, including AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal and senior leader Ramesh Chennithala, stating that he would take all factions into absolute confidence to deliver governance that aligns with public aspirations.

High Command Alignment and Next Steps

The decision follows a fierce multi-way deliberation within the party ranks that had delayed the announcement since the election results were declared on May 4. On Thursday morning, Rahul Gandhi held a definitive one-on-one meeting with K.C. Venugopal in New Delhi, stretching for nearly an hour, to finalise the consensus.

Conceding to the High Command’s choice, K.C. Venugopal extended his full cooperation. “I welcome this decision wholeheartedly,” Venugopal told reporters in Delhi, adding that the selection was made after thorough internal evaluations considering multiple structural parameters. He assured full organizational support to the incoming UDF administration.

In Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President Sunny Joseph confirmed that the scheduled parliamentary committee meeting at Indira Bhavan had been rescheduled from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM to accommodate the arrival of AICC observers. Following the CLP meeting, the leadership will officially seek an appointment with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to stake their claim to form the government.

Background and Political Context

The transition marks a generational shift in Kerala’s political landscape, steering the UDF into a new era without traditional stalwarts like Oommen Chandy and K. Karunakaran. The UDF secured a definitive two-thirds majority in the 140-member legislative assembly by winning 102 seats, comfortably unseating the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), which was reduced to 35 seats after a decade in power.
