The Al Nahda community is left reeling after a family dispute ends in a horrific murder-suicide; Dubai-based husband taken into custody for questioning.
SHARJAH — A horrific tragedy has sent shockwaves through the UAE expat community after a 35-year-old Indian woman allegedly threw her five-year-old daughter from their 15th-floor apartment before leaping to her death. The chilling incident occurred on Wednesday morning in the densely populated Al Nahda area of Sharjah.
Sharjah Police have officially registered the case as a suicide and referred the matter to the Public Prosecution for an exhaustive investigation into the circumstances that led to the catastrophic event.
A Chilling Chain of Events
According to eyewitnesses and tower staff, the tragedy unfolded around 7:15 AM on Wednesday. Shocked neighbors revealed that the woman first threw her young daughter from the balcony of their 15th-floor apartment. She then immediately jumped after the child. Because the 32-storey tower features six elevated levels of parking and an additional gym floor, the victims plummeted from an effective height of 22 floors before hitting the ground.
The building’s security guard recounted hearing a pair of deafening impacts before rushing outside to find a scene of absolute devastation. The young girl’s body was found on the road, while the mother lay on the adjacent pavement.
Emergency medical services and Sharjah Police units rushed to the scene, cordoning off the area until mid-morning. Although clean-up crews covered the site with sand after the ambulances departed, visible traces of the tragedy still lingered days later.
Family Disputes and Mental Health Under Scrutiny
The deceased woman, who hailed from Kerala and ran an online business, had been married for 12 years. Building management confirmed that the family had resided in the exact same apartment for over seven years. The tragedy has devastated an extended network of relatives in the UAE; the woman’s sister’s family lived in a neighboring apartment within the same building, while her father-in-law and brother-in-law also reside in the country.
The woman’s husband, employed as an aircraft resource allocation officer in Dubai, was taken into custody by authorities shortly after the incident. Police are currently questioning him.
Neighbors reported that law enforcement officers had actually visited the family’s apartment just the day prior following a volatile domestic dispute. According to the building’s security guard, the husband had previously claimed his wife was battling severe mental health issues.
A Community Frozen in Grief
The Al Nahda neighborhood remains shrouded in immense sorrow as residents struggle to come to terms with the loss. The building staff fondly remembered the five-year-old victim as a vibrant, friendly child.
“Every single morning, as her father dropped her off for school, she would turn around and wave goodbye at him. She was so exceptionally friendly with everyone in the building,” the security guard said, visibly shaken by the loss.
