History Beckons for Malayalis as Kannur-Born Parents’ Son Joins Julen Lopetegui’s 26-Man Squad for FIFA World Cup 2026
DOHA: Whenever the FIFA World Cup arrives, Kerala famously transforms into a vibrant carnival of football. Streets are adorned with giant cutouts and flags of distant nations, from Argentina to Brazil. However, for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, global Malayalis and the football-mad state of Kerala have a deeply personal reason to cheer. 19-year-old winger Tahsin Mohammed Jamshid has been officially named in Qatar’s 26-man squad by head coach Julen Lopetegui, putting him on the verge of becoming the first player of Indian origin to feature in a FIFA World Cup.
From Kannur to the Aspire Academy
Though born and raised in Doha, Tahsin’s roots trace directly back to North Malabar. His father, Jamshid, hails from the historic football hub of Thalassery, while his mother, Shyma, is from Valapattanam in the Kannur district. The family migrated to Qatar in 1996.
Inheriting his sporting genes from his father—a former talented footballer who represented Calicut University—Tahsin developed his skills at Doha’s world-class Aspire Academy. His progression through the ranks has been clinical, representing Qatar at the Under-17 and Under-19 levels, which included scoring crucial goals for the youth national side.
A Trailblazer in Gulf Football
Tahsin has already established himself as a history-maker in Middle Eastern football. He became the first player of Indian origin to play in the Qatar Stars League (QSL), the country’s top-tier professional division, representing heavyweights Al Duhail.
Tahsin Mohammed Jamshid: Player Profile
• Position: Winger (Left Flank)
• Key Attributes: Explosive pace, sharp dribbling, 1v1 capability
• Senior Debut: FIFA World Cup Qualifier vs Afghanistan
Known for his blistering pace and tactical versatility on the left flank, the teenager earned his senior international debut for Qatar during a World Cup qualifier against Afghanistan. He was also a member of the squad that faced India during the qualification rounds, cementing his position in Lopetegui’s long-term blueprints.
Background: A Double Heritage to Watch
While India continues its pursuit of World Cup qualification despite the tournament’s expansion to 48 teams, the South Asian diaspora will have multiple reasons to track the tournament in North America. Interestingly, Qatar is not the only squad featuring South Asian heritage. Australia’s 26-man squad features Melbourne Victory’s 25-year-old dynamic winger Nishan Velupillay, who traces his roots to Kerala’s neighboring state of Tamil Nadu. The race is now on to see who will become the first player of Indian descent to officially step onto a World Cup pitch.
The Road Ahead
Qatar faces a formidable task in the group stages of the tournament, sharing a group with co-hosts Canada, Switzerland, and Bosnia & Herzegovina. While securing a spot in the knockout rounds will require monumental effort from the reigning Asian champions, the mere inclusion of a 19-year-old Malayali boy in the squad has already secured a historic victory for the global expatriate community.
