Massive transit expansion across six major streets promises to slash bus journey times by up to 59% and boost ridership.

DUBAI: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the successful completion of 30% of its 14.5-kilometer dedicated Bus and Taxi Lanes Project. Spanning six strategic corridors across the emirate, the major infrastructure initiative aims to drastically cut transit times, improve schedule punctuality, and incentivize a shift from private vehicles to sustainable public transport.
The project is being aggressively implemented across six key arterial routes: Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street, 2nd December Street, Al Satwa Street, Al Nahda Street, Omar Bin Al Khattab Street, and Naif Street. Upon full completion of this phase, Dubai’s total dedicated bus lane network will expand significantly from its current footprint to reach a total length of 20.6 kilometers.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized that dedicated lanes represent a cornerstone of Dubai’s long-term sustainable mobility targets. By providing rapid, regular, and reliable services, the project looks to make public transport the primary and most attractive choice for daily commuters and visitors alike.
The operational benefits are poised to dramatically reshape the commuter experience during peak hours. According to RTA projections, bus journey times will drop by 59% on Naif Street, 54% on Al Satwa Street, 50% on Omar bin Al Khattab Street, and 38% on Al Nahda Street. Furthermore, punctuality and arrival times are slated to improve by up to 56% on 2nd December Street and 52% on Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah Street. Beyond boosting passenger satisfaction, these efficiency gains will reduce overall direct and indirect operational costs and lower fleet requirements for the authority.
