Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has introduced advanced drone technology to inspect Dubai Metro tunnels, marking a major step forward in operational safety, efficiency and digital transformation. The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with Keolis MHI, the operator of Dubai Metro.
Announced on December 22, 2025, the new inspection method has already delivered a 60 per cent reduction in inspection time, while significantly improving accuracy and safety. The move represents a shift from traditional inspection practices to smarter, technology-driven solutions aligned with Dubai’s vision for innovation and excellence in public transport.
Dawood Alrais, Director of Rail Maintenance at RTA’s Rail Agency, said the technology has strengthened operational efficiency while reducing risks to human inspectors. “Drone technology enables access to tunnel areas that previously posed logistical challenges and required advance arrangements. Today, inspections can be conducted more easily, with a wider field of vision and high-resolution imagery that supports detailed and accurate analysis,” he said.
He added that the initiative also supports automated data collection and digital reporting, enhancing maintenance planning and decision-making. The captured data will also pave the way for the future use of artificial intelligence to analyse tunnel conditions and support predictive maintenance.
The deployment aligns with RTA’s 2024–2030 strategy, which prioritises sustainability, innovation and service excellence. It also supports the UAE National Innovation Strategy, aimed at positioning the country among the world’s leading innovation-driven nations.
Vikas Sardana, Acting Managing Director of Keolis MHI, said the project reflects a shared commitment to innovation and safety. “By adopting advanced technologies, we enhance operational performance while ensuring the safety of our teams and setting new benchmarks for excellence in rail operations,” he said.
As Dubai continues to lead the transition towards smart mobility and intelligent infrastructure, the integration of drone technology into metro tunnel inspections highlights the emirate’s commitment to advanced safety standards, digital innovation and future-ready transport systems.
