Ajman: The Ajman Federal Court of First Instance has sentenced a 36-year-old Arab female TikToker to six months in prison followed by deportation after finding her guilty of publicly insulting another individual during a TikTok live stream.
The court ruled on September 18 that the accused violated Article 427(3) of the UAE Federal Penal Code, which criminalises acts that harm a person’s honour or social standing through any form of communication. The offence was established after the woman broadcast defamatory and abusive remarks against the victim via social media.
In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered the defendant to pay court fees. The victim’s civil compensation claim was referred to a specialised civil court, allowing the complainant to seek damages without delaying the criminal proceedings.
The Public Prosecution charged the woman with using TikTok to disseminate statements that damaged the victim’s dignity and reputation. Court records noted that the language used went beyond acceptable expression and constituted online abuse and defamation.
Translations of the remarks, originally made in Egyptian Arabic (Masri), revealed highly offensive content that questioned the victim’s character and included insults directed at the victim’s mother. Although the accused admitted to making the statements, she attempted to downplay her role, an argument the court rejected.
The case was prosecuted under UAE laws that criminalise insults and defamation through electronic communication, reinforcing the country’s strict stance against misuse of social media platforms.
