The distinguished techno-educationalist and former NIT Calicut professor passed away on Sunday.
KOZHIKODE, July 5, 2026 — Prof. K.K. Abdul Gaffar, a renowned techno-educationalist, academic leader, and author, passed away peacefully today at the age of 89. Known for his expansive career in engineering education and institutional development across India and the United Arab Emirates, he leaves behind a lasting legacy in the academic and engineering sectors.
Prof. K.K. Abdul Gaffar dedicated several decades to public service, engineering education, and academic administration. Throughout his distinguished career, he served in prominent leadership roles at premier institutions. Notably, he was a Professor and Head of the Department at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Calicut and TKM College of Engineering in Kollam. He also served as the Principal of the Anjuman Institute of Technology and Management.
Beyond India, Prof. Abdul Gaffar made significant institutional contributions in the Middle East. He served as the Senior Director and Commissioning Lead at Gulf Medical University (formerly Gulf Medical College) in Ajman, UAE, where he played a pivotal role in its foundational setup. Additionally, he worked as a Consultant Engineer with the Saudi Aramco Technical Services Company.
In addition to his academic and engineering milestones, Prof. Abdul Gaffar was an accomplished writer. His widely acclaimed autobiography, Njan Saakshi (I Am a Witness), gained national attention when it was officially released by legendary Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Born on May 6, 1937, Prof. Abdul Gaffar passed away on July 5, 2026. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jameela Schamnad, his son, Dr. Shajir Gaffar, and his three daughters, Dr. Farida Gaffar, Dr. Jamalunissa Gaffar, and Er. Shahnaz Gaffar. His funeral details are expected to be announced by the family.
