Dubai Airports rolls out ‘Smart Gates PreCheck’ tool via Pocket Flights, enabling seamless passport scanning to skip traditional immigration queues

DUBAI, UAE : Travellers passing through Dubai International Airport (DXB) can now instantly verify their eligibility to use the emirate’s automated Smart Gates prior to arrival, eliminating passport control wait times. The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) and Dubai Airports have integrated a seamless digital verification feature—the Smart Gates PreCheck—onto DXB’s official web platform.

The automated system utilizes advanced facial recognition and biometric databases to process passengers through immigration in seven to 13 seconds without requiring physical document stamping or officer interaction. Despite widespread eligibility across GCC citizens, UAE residents, visa-on-arrival travelers, and biometric passport holders, many passengers routinely queue at traditional counters unaware that they are already auto-enrolled from previous visits.

How to Check Your Eligibility Online

Passengers can test their clearance status from any global location using a smartphone camera in under a minute:

  • Visit the official DXB flight platform at dxb.pocketflights.com.
  • Select the Smart Gates PreCheck service on the main interface.
  • Align the primary photo page of your physical passport within the designated on-screen frame.
  • View your instant result as the system scans the machine-readable zone (MRZ) and confirms whether you can proceed directly to the biometric gates.

On-Site Access: Passengers already inside DXB terminals can scan physical QR codes placed throughout the Arrivals and Departures passport control halls to launch the same scanning tool instantly.

Alternative verification remains accessible via the official GDRFA Dubai portal under the Inquiry for Smart Gate Registration service, which accepts manual entry of Emirates ID details or passport numbers. However, airport authorities recommend the Pocket Flights camera scan for faster results.

How to Navigate Smart Gates at the Airport

For confirmed travellers, passing through the automated gates requires a few simple steps:

  • Step 1: Step onto the designated footprint markings in front of the gate.
  • Step 2: Remove masks, hats, glasses, or any face coverings.
  • Step 3: Look directly at the camera and focus on the green light indicator.
  • Step 4: Wait 7–13 seconds while facial recognition technology verifies your biometric data.
  • Step 5: Proceed through the gate automatically as it opens without needing an immigration officer.

No advance registration or fee is required. Passengers who have legally entered the UAE through DXB in recent years are automatically registered into the GDRFA biometric database during their initial border check.

Next-Gen Border Control: The ‘Red Carpet’ Corridor

Dubai’s border authorities have also begun rolling out the Travel Without Borders – Red Carpet system across select DXB terminals.

Driven by multi-subject artificial intelligence, this touchless corridor enables up to 10 eligible passengers to walk continuously through immigration simultaneously without stopping or scanning documents. The technology cuts border processing time down from 12.5 seconds to just 3.4 seconds, establishing a new global benchmark for international airport operations.
