Direct Airstrikes Pause as Iran Shifts to Proxy and Maritime Pressure Campaign

Three days of silence between Washington and Tehran mask an expanding conflict across strategic Middle East waterways, oil infrastructure, and the Caspian Sea.

DUBAI : A three-day lull in direct military strikes between the United States and Iran has offered a temporary diplomatic window, even as Tehran continues to exert pressure across regional chokepoints, oil infrastructure, and international diplomatic channels.

The pause follows nearly two weeks of escalating exchanges triggered by Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, which prompted retaliatory US strikes against military infrastructure along Iran’s coastline. While Washington has halted aerial bombardments to allow room for Omani-led mediation, Tehran maintains that its military actions are suspended conditionally as long as American strikes do not resume.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz confirmed that Washington is allowing space for diplomatic contacts to revive a collapsed interim ceasefire. However, military assets continue to move into the region, with U.S. officials stressing that all operational options remain active.

While direct missile exchanges between the primary combatants have ceased, indirect hostilities have flared elsewhere. Saudi Arabian air defenses intercepted drones launched by Iran-backed Iraqi militias targeting oil facilities, while Yemen’s Houthi movement separately claimed responsibility for strikes against Saudi energy infrastructure. Jordan also downed two unidentified drones within its airspace, and two separate drone strikes targeted Kurdish-Iranian opposition positions in northern Iraq.

Strategic maritime chokepoints remain the core point of leverage. Commercial vessel traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has dropped to a three-week low under an enforced U.S. naval blockade and Iranian threats to shipping. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed ongoing bilateral talks with Oman regarding future navigation management, while reiterating that the waterway remains officially closed to transit. Tehran is also extending maritime pressure toward the Bab Al-Mandeb Strait, where Houthi forces have targeted commercial tankers linked to Saudi Arabia.

Beyond the Persian Gulf, the conflict has intersected with the war in Eastern Europe. Iran issued severe warnings to Kyiv following a Ukrainian drone strike on an Iranian merchant vessel in the Caspian Sea that killed one crew member and injured another. Baghaei termed the strike an unlawful provocation that would not go unanswered.

Concurrently, diplomatic friction with European states escalated after Iranian authorities detained and interrogated two French diplomats in Tehran on allegations of internal interference, drawing sharp protests from Paris.

With core disputes over Iran’s nuclear program temporarily sidelined, mediators are prioritizing the stabilization of a broader maritime and regional cease-fire. Analysts note that maintaining pressure through allied militias and strategic shipping routes allows Tehran to preserve its bargaining position without directly triggering another round of heavy U.S. airstrikes.
