Motorists face penalties up to Dh3,000, vehicle impoundment, and black points for failing to adhere to safety regulations around school drop-off zones.

DUBAI — Road transport authorities and traffic police departments across the United Arab Emirates have issued detailed safety guidelines and reminders regarding heavy penalties for traffic violations as schools prepare to welcome students back for the new academic term.

Traffic enforcement agencies, including the Dubai Police General HQ and the Ministry of Interior, emphasized that enforcement will be strictly monitored through automated surveillance cameras and police patrols in designated school zones. The warnings aim to prevent congestion, minimize risks to young pedestrians, and streamline morning and afternoon transit periods.

Failing to stop when a school bus extends its side ‘Stop’ sign arm carries a strict fine of Dh1,000 alongside 10 black points on the driver’s license. School bus drivers are similarly mandated to display the sign when picking up or dropping off students, with failure to deploy the warning system drawing a Dh200 fine and six black points.

Pedestrian safety remains a primary focus of the regulatory push. Drivers who fail to grant right-of-way to pedestrians at marked crossings face a Dh500 fine and six black points. Police departments noted that school zones experience high foot traffic during early morning drop-off hours, requiring motorists to reduce speed well below posted limits when approaching zebra crossings.

Arbitrary stopping in active traffic lanes to unload children—a common cause of sudden morning bottlenecks—is classified as obstructing traffic. Drivers stopping in the middle of the road face penalties reaching up to Dh1,000 and six black points. Authorities advise parents to utilize designated drop-off bays provided within school campuses or legal parking bays nearby.

Prohibited parking tactics, including double parking, blocking residential driveways, or obstructing school gates, carry minimum fines of Dh200. In severe cases where illegal parking creates hazardous obstructions for crossing children, vehicles are subject to towing.

Speeding in designated school zones carries tiered penalties under the UAE Federal Traffic Law. Fines range from Dh300 for minor infractions up to Dh3,000 for exceeding speed limits by more than 80 km/h. High-speed infractions also carry up to 23 black points and mandatory vehicle impoundment for up to 60 days.

Distracted driving violations—specifically hand-held mobile phone use while queueing in school lanes or navigating congestion—incur an Dh800 fine and four black points. Enforcement agencies confirmed that smart surveillance systems continuously scan drivers for mobile device distraction.

Traffic patrols will be deployed across major arterial roads leading to educational hubs throughout the first weeks of the term to manage flow and enforce compliance.
