South-Eastern Europe’s rich cultural mosaic takes center stage as the UAE capital expands cross-cultural publishing ties and translation initiatives.
ABU DHABI, Aug 29:The Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) has designated the Balkan region as the Guest of Honour for its 35th edition, launching a broad program designed to deepen cultural diplomacy, foster regional publishing partnerships, and expand literary translations between the Arab world and South-Eastern Europe.
Organized by the Abu Dhabi Language Centre under the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, the annual fair is using this year’s platform to highlight the distinct literary, artistic, and historical contributions of the Balkans. Located at the intersection of diverse civilizational influences, the region encompasses a unique cultural landscape shaped by centuries of shared history, varied languages, and vibrant intellectual traditions.
Visitors to the exhibition will have access to dedicated pavilions showcasing landmark literary works from the region, including those of Ivo Andrić, the 1961 Nobel Laureate in Literature best known for his historical masterpiece The Bridge on the Drina. The programming extends beyond literature to cover traditional visual arts, music, architecture, and regional folklore, illustrating the historical role of Balkan urban centers as crossroads of cultural exchange.
Special delegations from South-Eastern European nations, including official participation from the Republic of North Macedonia, are present in Abu Dhabi to establish direct operational linkages with Arab publishers, literary agencies, and cultural foundations. The primary aim of these multilateral meetings is to secure co-publishing agreements, establish rights-exchange frameworks, and accelerate translation grants to make contemporary Balkan literature accessible to Arabic readers while translating modern Arab works into regional languages.
This strategic showcase underscores Abu Dhabi’s continued focus on leveraging cultural events to strengthen international diplomatic and economic ties. By serving as a convergence point for publishers, writers, and cultural ministers, the fair continues to reinforce its role as a key commercial and intellectual hub in the global publishing industry.
