Skywatchers in the UAE are in for a rare visual treat tonight, January 3, 2026, as two major celestial events—the Wolf Supermoon and the Quadrantids Meteor Shower—appear simultaneously in the night sky.
The January Wolf Moon, the first full moon of the year, will also be a Supermoon, meaning it will appear larger and brighter as it reaches its closest point to Earth. As it rises, the moon is expected to glow with a striking golden hue.
Adding to the spectacle is the Quadrantids Meteor Shower, one of the most intense annual meteor displays. Known for producing bright fireballs, the Quadrantids originate from asteroid 2003 EH1 and are capable of cutting through strong moonlight.
To mark the occasion, the Dubai Astronomy Group is hosting a guided stargazing event at Al Qudra Desert from 11:00 PM to 3:00 AM. Visitors will be able to observe the Supermoon, Jupiter, and deep-sky objects using professional telescopes, along with educational talks and sky-mapping sessions.
The peak of the meteor shower is expected around 2:00 AM. Registration is mandatory via the Althuraya Astronomy Center website.
