The release prospects of Jana Nayagan, starring Thalapathy Vijay, have been thrown into uncertainty after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) informed the Madras High Court that the film will undergo a fresh examination by a new censor panel, just days before its intended January 9 release.
The development follows a legal plea by the film’s producers, who sought judicial intervention after the certification process extended beyond a month. While the CBFC had earlier suggested cuts and audio modifications, the board has now opted for a re-review, prompting the court to adjourn the case to January 7.
Trade analysts note that the delay could impact the film’s pan-India rollout, as clearance of the Tamil version is a prerequisite for certification of its dubbed versions across multiple languages. Major multiplex chains have consequently withheld ticket bookings in key metropolitan markets.
Interestingly, the certification uncertainty has not dented audience demand in southern markets. Early ticket sales in Karnataka and Kerala indicate robust interest, with several single screens reporting sold-out morning shows. Overseas markets have also shown strong confidence, with advance bookings reportedly exceeding Rs 25 crore.
Directed by H Vinoth, Jana Nayagan carries immense expectations as Vijay’s final on-screen appearance before transitioning into active politics. The film boasts a strong supporting cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Priyamani, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, and Narain.
With limited time remaining before release, the industry now awaits the outcome of the re-examination, which will determine whether the film releases as scheduled or faces a last-minute postponement.
