From October 9, unpaid users lose access to Flash and Pro tiers, while mid-tier AI Plus subscribers will be cut off from Gemini Pro.
WASHINGTON — October 5, 2026 : Google is restructuring access tiers across its Gemini artificial intelligence lineup, moving to end free public availability for its mid-tier and flagship models starting October 9.
Under the revised policy, users on the unpaid tier will be restricted exclusively to Gemini Flash-Lite, stripping away the broader selection of three distinct models previously accessible without a paid subscription.
The overhaul redraws boundaries for paid subscribers as well. Customers on the entry-level Google AI Plus subscription will retain access to Flash-Lite and the mid-tier Flash model, but will lose access to the flagship Gemini Pro. Google confirmed that AI Plus account holders will receive direct email notifications detailing when the downgrade takes effect on their respective billing cycles.
Top-tier customers will see no reduction in model selection. Subscribers paying for Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra plans will keep unrestricted access to all three standard versions: Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro.
Google also confirmed that AI Pro and AI Ultra tiers will retain exclusive access to Deep Think, a specialized parallel reasoning engine engineered to tackle intricate mathematical computations, programming logic, and multi-step analytical problems.
The transition marks a definitive shift in Google’s commercialization strategy for consumer-facing AI. By establishing stricter model gating between free, entry-level, and enterprise-grade plans, the company aims to curb massive compute expenses associated with running larger multimodal models across hundreds of millions of unpaid users, steering power users toward paid tiers.
