GDRFA marks major recognition for its contactless biometric system that clears passengers on the move in under five seconds

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates —Dubai’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs celebrated winning the government category of the Dubai-IT Award for its innovative “Red Carpet” travel corridor, a seamless biometric immigration gate at Dubai International Airport that processes passengers on foot in under five seconds without requiring physical passports or manual screening.

Leadership and technical teams from the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) gathered at the directorate’s headquarters to celebrate the distinction. The initiative eliminates passport queues and stops at traditional checkpoints, clearing travellers simultaneously as they walk through a designated smart lane.

Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA Dubai, led the event alongside Major General Obaid Muhair bin Suroor and Major General Talal Ahmed Al Shanqiti, Assistant Director General for Airport Passport Affairs. Al Marri commended the engineering, border control, and operations teams who designed and deployed the corridor, emphasizing that passenger-centric innovation remains central to Dubai’s transport vision. He extended appreciation to Dubai Airports for its continued operational collaboration.

The award was announced by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council. Sheikh Hamdan previously underscored that advanced public technologies in the emirate must directly enhance everyday civilian experiences and exceed global benchmarks in efficiency.

The system relies on high-resolution biometric facial recognition and artificial intelligence to authenticate identities on the move. Travellers simply walk straight through the corridor without pausing, retrieving physical boarding passes, or scanning digital barcodes.

Operationally, the platform marks a significant capacity upgrade over conventional passport control desks. While a standard manual counter handles a single traveller at a time, the Red Carpet corridor processes up to ten passengers concurrently. GDRFA data indicates the corridor operates with a passenger satisfaction rate exceeding 99 percent, reducing average transaction times to under five seconds per person.

By cutting transit friction for inbound and transit passengers, border authorities aim to maintain rapid clearance standards as passenger volume through Dubai International Airport continues to scale.
